Sixteen entries turned out for the 2015 running of the Hangover autotest on Friday 2nd January. This annual event offers a great opportunity to blow away the festive over indulgences and have a bit of fun st the same time.  Gareth White took top prize in his Toyota Starlet, with his co-driver Craig Forsyth taking second place on his turn to drive.

Hangover - 2 January 2015
Report by Clayton Lackenby

Following last year’s cancelled event, 17 competitors braved the cold, damp morning to complete in the 2015 Hangover Autotest. After signing on the obligatory walk round the tests is always a strange sight. We even had some running backwards.

Scott Bell, who was always great to watch in a rear wheel drive car, turned up with his daughter Louise in an MX-5. Scott said it had been 18 years since he last took part in an Autotest. He went on to blame the arrival of Louise for stopping in the first place.

Test 1 got underway and saw ‘Dangerous’ Des Campbell misjudge reversing into the garage. Colin Beatson from Walkerburn in a Cavalier 2000 pulled his exhaust off on the speed bump on route to the start line. After some swift repairs he set off only to pull up quickly after with engine problems. He and Ally Jim, who was also using the car, would not complete any further. Hopefully we will see them out again. Chalky White looked quick and would continue throughout the day.

In the second test several competitors were over enthusiastic with the throttle pedal and took diversions off the tarmac and onto the grass. One even managed to strike a tree, scraping some paint. Thankfully the tree was undamaged. The Clerk of the Course had to issue some warnings and after several more excursions onto the grass penalties were issued for going out of bounds.

After 4 runs Chalky was 1st overall, Craig Forsyth 2nd and Scott Bell in 3rd. Scott was shaking off the rust and getting into it.

During the changeover the heavens opened and the marshals got soaked setting up for the 3rd test. Just as they finished the sun came out again.

First timers Craig Murphy, Chris hair and Jake Sinclair all improved throughout the day. Chris Hair stood out and several old hands remarked he has potential for the future.

The remaining test went quickly and by then everyone wanted to finish up and get out of the cold. Scott Bell provided a spectacular display on the last two runs showing how rear wheel drive cars should be driven. Hopefully we will see him and Louise out again soon.

After the final run all the equipment was packed away while hardy timekeepers Alan Sharp and Dave Robson tallied up the times.

The Leisure Centre’s old kitchen was used for a small prize giving with Stuart Cockburn winning 1st in the front wheel drive class, Scott Bell wining 1st in the rear wheel drive class and Craig Forsyth winning 1st in the specials class. 1st overall was Chalky White with consistent performance throughout the day. Each won a Halfords Gift Voucher.

Thanks to all the marshals and officials for standing out in the cold. Hawick & Border Car Club hope to run three more Autotests in 2015.
