MSA congratulates Hamilton on second F1 title
The
MSA – governing body of UK motor sport – sends its warmest
congratulations to Lewis Hamilton on being crowned the 2014 FIA Formula
One World Drivers’ Champion after winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
This
year has been outstanding for 29-year-old Hamilton and his Mercedes AMG
Petronas Formula One Team. He won 11 rounds – including his home race
at Silverstone – to surpass Nigel Mansell’s British record of 31 grand
prix victories.
Hamilton becomes only the 16th driver in F1’s
64-year history to win the championship more than once. His first crown
came in only his second F1 season in 2008, having missed being a rookie
champion in 2007 by a single point.
Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive,
said: “Lewis’s second F1 title caps a very special year for British
motor racing talent. The Union Jack has flown above podiums right
across the globe, with British drivers also crowned champions in GP2,
GP3, Formula Renault 2.0 NEC, the World Endurance Championship, and
both the World and European kart championships.
“We have seen in the
past how big an impact a British F1 champion has on the sport
domestically, so what Lewis has done is extra special for UK motor
sport in every sense. With two titles under his belt, he must now be
considered one of the all-time greats and we are proud that his story
began on British kart and race circuits, with an MSA competition
licence in his pocket. He is an outstanding ambassador for UK motor
sport and a great role model for the next generation of British racing
drivers.”
